Name Details:
Identified By:  John Witthoft
Named For:   Susquehannock Culture
Date Identified:  1959
Type Site:
Point Validity: Valid type

Witthoft is a distinguished anthropologist who discussed these points in his 1959 publication Susquehannock  Miscellany.  Professional references since that time are limited to discussion of projectile points associated with the Susquehannock Culture.   The name was then popularized by Fogleman in 1988 in his personally published book on projectile points of Pennsylvania.  This type has had many collector source references since that time.  These points are characteristic or identical to Levanna points, but are differentiated by the associated culture.  This is considered a cultural type.
Susquehannock Triangle
Cluster: Late Woodland to Early Mississippian Triangle Cluster
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a broad medium to small triangular point.  The cross section may range from flattened to elliptical in thicker points.  The blade is primarily straight and may form an isosceles triangle (half as wide as the height) or an equilateral triangle (as wide as the height).  The base is most commonly concaved to deeply concave, but may be almost straight on some examples.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Length - 18 to 40 mm,  Width - 14 to 35 mm,  Thickness - 3 to 6 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:
Bald Eagle Jasper
Additional Comments:

The Shenks Ferry culture and the Susquehannock Culture existed during the same time and had overlapping territories making it difficult to distinguish triangular points used by the Susquehannock culture and the Shenks Ferry culture.  Shenks Ferry points tend to be slightly narrower than the Susquehannock triangular points.
