Mayer – Oakes was an anthropologist who started as a field archaeologist for the Carnegie Museum, Director of the Department of Anthropology, University of Oklahoma, and was a professor of anthropology at the University of Toronto, University of Manitoba, and Texas Tech University.  This type was named in a professional publication and has professional recognitions as a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a medium side notch point that is triangular to pentagonal in shape.  The cross section is primarily flattened, but rarely be elliptical.  The blade may range from excurvate to an angular tip with the sides of the blade being parallel.  Parallel notches form horizontal shoulders on this point.  The stem is expanded.  The base is commonly straight, to may be slightly concaved.  Basal thinning and grinding is usually present.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

Total Length - 40 to 60 mm (49 mm average), Stem Length - 5 to 11 mm (9 mm average),  Blade Width - 15 to 20 mm (18 mm average),  Stem Width - 14 to 20 mm (17 mm average), Thickness - 3 to 6 mm

This point is commonly mistaken for a Jacks Reef Corner Notch, but this point is a side notched point and associated to the Intrusive Mound culture.

The Intrusive Mound Culture is a post Hopewellian culture.

A similar point, Intrusive Mound, is associated with the Intrusive Mound culture as well, but that point is a corner notched point while this is a  side notched point.

It is thought that these points phased out and were replaced by the Levanna point (W2).
